Monument record 3019/1/1 - Possible Roman or medieval iron working site

Large amounts of iron working waste have been recorded at various locations in the area.

{1} There are huge heaps of iron cinders at Finshed - many waggon - loads of them. A forge mill was supposed to be at the east end of "the present pools" on the site of the later corn mill. Up-stream, at the corner of Laxton Field, was the Furnace Mill and by it are heaps of cinders. Its water was supplied by springs in Laxton Field called Ashwells.

{2} Forge mill supposedly at E end of "present pools" on site of later corn mill; predecessor of ornamental lake probably provided water supply; no surface remains visible;

{4} No traces of a mill at the site (SP 9740 9788) could be seen and it was not possible to give an accurate dating. Medieval or post medieval.
