Summary

Two stone coffins were found in 1933 during ironstone quarrying. Although one was too damaged for removal, the other was taken to Harringworth churchyard.

Full Description

{1} Possible Romano-British inhumations found at 3ft depth; there was a slight NNW deviation from N/S. Found during ironstone quarrying.

{4} Two stone coffins and some Roman pottery were found during ironstone working in 1932 and 1933, 1km south-east of the village. One coffin was removed to the churchyard where it now lies.

{6} [SP 92429667] Two stone coffins were found in 1933 on the left hand side of the road to Laxton from Harringworth at the top of Scotgate Hill.
One was too damaged for removal; the incumbent of St. John's Church, who gives the approx. site of the finds, states the other coffin to be in his churchyard.

A stone coffin now lies in the churchyard of St. John's, Harringworth at SP 91649741, it appears to be possibly of Roman date.

{8} A gazetteer of Roman finds in the Welland Valley mentions a limestone coffin and Roman pottery found during ironstone working in 1932, on the road from Harringworth to Laxton, and another found in 1933.
