Stone axe, not in situ
Map
Type and Period (1)
Full Description
{1} Find in 1968 of a Neolithic stone axe in the gravel of the concrete runway during removal; not in situ.
{2} Mr Blott, quarry manager of Stewart & Lloyds, stated that in 1968 while removing a concrete runway he found a
polished stone axe at SP 9310 9726 in the gravel foundations. The axe was sectioned at Bristol University and has now been returned to the finder.
The airfield was a wartime construction and the origin of the gravel is unknown but Tallington (TF 1010) seems a likely provenance.
