Full Description

{1} Iron Age and Roman settlement (SP 987676), in the south west of the parish on Boulder Clay at 250ft above OD. A small area of pebbles, with early iron Age pottery and some Roman wares, has been found.

{3,4} Possible Iron Age and/or Roman enclosures, probably indicating a settlement, are recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011. An irregular curving ditched boundary describes an arc about 150 metres long and probably forms part of an enclosure. To the west of this there is an irregular curved enclosure which measures about 30 metres by 30 metres. They are centred at SP 9872 6760. Indistinct cropmarks indicate there are probably more boundaries and pits and that the site is more complex.

A straight ditched boundary passes between the two enclosures but this may be a relatively modern feature as it continues as a break in the crop and then as a cropmark into the next field. It was partly mapped on the ‘uncertain’ layer during the Northamptonshire NMP project.

Other enclosures to the north and east (see Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record for Monument Records) were mapped during the Northamptonshire NMP project. They may be related to the settlement enclosures described in this record. They are also recorded on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011.

{5} The enclosures are as described above (Sources 3-4) and were mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project from aerial photographs.
