Full Description

{2} Building works revealed a small Romano-British site with a pennanular hut-circle ditch of Iron Age type as the principle feature. The overall diameter was 40 ft with an entrance of 13ft width; there was an off-centre posthole and a near central hearth of stone and tile. The pottery recovered was of the early 2nd century AD. While stone circular buildings are fairly common in Northamptonshire, the existence of this mud or daub round-house suggests a Celtic survival into Romano-British times only slightly modified by the conquest. Several shallow clay pits were found;

{6} This area was assessed as part of the Bedford Borough NMP aerial survey project. No features as described above were visible on any of the available aerial photographs.

{7} The finds archive is held by the ARC. No accompanying notes have been found, but there is a large quantity of grey wares (rims, bodies and bases, some possibly carinated, horizontal lines, some sooting), shell-tempered wares, storage jars (bases, bodies and rims) some with vertical scoring, Samian (one with part stamp) cbm.
