Monument record 6876/1/2 - Former Medieval Moat

Site of Medieval moat. Nothing is known of its history, but it was probably associated with a Medieval farmstead. By 1842 the moat had been destroyed, except for part of the south east side which survived as a pond.

{1} Documentary evidence; this was probably the site of a medieval farmstead; a map of 1760 held by Northampton Record Office shows a farm surrounded by a moat 10m wide with 2 entrances- 1 on the south side and one on the north; there was an extension of the ditch beyond the north-east corner; Earthwork; moat, the south east side of which survives as a pond; the surrounding fields probably represent medieval assarting and the moated area was probably the site of a medieval farm.
{2} In the map of 1760, the farm was completely surrounded by a square ditch that appears to have been 10m wide; there were 2 entrances;
{3} By 1842 the moat was almost completely destroyed except for a small part to the south-east, which survived as a pond; Sitename: Biggin Lodge.
