Monument record 3390/0/15 - Early to early-middle Iron Age activity, former Brafield Allotments

A small trench was excavated at Brafield Allotments in 1962 and Iron Age features were identified. A large assemblage of pottery was recovered. The area was re-excavated in 2001.

{1} A trial trench placed in an area of blackish soil recovered a ditch containing Iron Age pottery, animal bone and prehistoric flints.

{2} Small excavation by Northamptonshire Archaeological Society at c.SP826592. Previous excavation hereabouts revealed Iron Age pottery. Excavation continues. General photos included but no details.

{4} Small trial excavations were carried out by Richard Hollowell in 1962 uncovering two pits and a ditch. A significant assemblage of early or early-middle Iron Age pottery was recovered, particularly from the larger pit. In 2001 Northamptonshire Archaeological Society re-excavated the area. A geophysical survey carried out prior to the excavation revealed few other features in the vicinity. The only new features identified were a ditch or gully and a deposit of dark soil. Pottery reports from 1962 and 2001. The chronolgy is thought to parallel Gretton and Rainsborough with a large portion of the pottery assemblage likely to date to the 6th and 5th/4th centuries BC.
