Full Description

{1} During building operations in 1971 two parallel, curved, linear ditches, perhaps a trackway, were discovered, with a circular ditch, probably a hut-site, and various other small pits. Finds included crude shelly Iron Age pottery in the ditches, and a sherd of Glastonbury ware, suggesting a date of 25
to 50 BC, an iron knife and a bent iron rod; discovered in 1971; fieldname: Hemingwell Lodge;

{4}Two curving ditches (nos 1 and 3), approxiamately 2m in depth and 15m apart, were initially thought to be part of a circular enclosure within which the other features were concentrated. A continued watch along the full length of the road scarping did not find their expected return. The two ditches could be enclosure ditches since even though their return was not observed, it can not be ruled out, given the conditions that prevailed. Could they be boundary ditches? Unfortunately not dated by pottery.Within the curve of the ditches were a number of pits and a briefly seen roundhouse ditch. Pottery found from the site is late Iron Age up to just before the Roman invasion.
