Full Description

{1,8} Finds of two Romano-British coins and a few pot sherds. One coin of Faustina II. The other with obv.: imp Constantinus Aug. Head to right. Rev.: soli invictocomiti… sol with globe looking left. The coins are now in the possession of D.A Knibbs, No.17 Poplar Rd, Burton Latimer; the pottery is in Westfield Museum (Kettering)

{3} Iron Age and Roman settlement (centred SP 895745) lies SW of the village on land sloping W to the R Ise, on sand at 68m above OD. Two Roman coins and some pottery were found some years ago when the area was allotments. During building development in 1967-8 pits and ditches were noted and examination of pipeline and foundation trenches revealed worked flints, cores and hand-made pottery, apparently of Iron Age type. A wide range of Romano-British coarse wares, samian and roofing tiles was also found. Stripping of topsoil for a new road revealed other ditches, dated to the Roman perion, clay-lined pits and traces of stone foundations.

{4} The find scatter was centred to SP89417451.

{2} Pits and ditches on building site containing worked flints and cores, handmade Iron Age pottery, and Roman material: a wide range of coarsewares and Samian fragments, roofing of both clay tiles and buff sandstone.

{5} Topsoil stripping for a roadway revealed Roman ditches, clay lines pits and traces of stone foundations. The features were not investigated but pottery from the surface included carinated vessels of Belgic type, channel rim cooking pots and mortaria with painted flanges.

{6} RB occupation debris and IA potsherds from an area centred SP 895745 has been found by D.A Jackson and J.R Fox during road improvements.

{7} Mr J.R Fox stated that the finds were made during the winter of 1967/68 and indicated the extent of the scatter on the 6" centred to SP 89417451. The finds are in Kettering Museum along with the coins found by D.A Knibbs (Auth 8). The site is now under a new housing estate.
