Summary

Finds of Roman occupation debris including 2nd century pottery, roof tiles and a coin indicates a settlement covering 2 hectares. Saxon and Medieval pottery was also found.

Full Description

{0} Fieldwalking recovered Iron Age, possible Belgic, and Romano-British pot sherds. 4 Saxon pot sherds were also recovered. Fieldname: Butt's Close. [Source uncertain].

{2} SP 884649. Roman and Medieval sherds and five undated clay tiles were recovered from the footings of two bungalows in 1970. The Roman pottery, shelly, grey and colour coated wares, indicate a 2nd century date.

{1} Finds of AD C2nd pot sherds and tile fragments were found during construction of a bungalow in 1970.
Fieldwalking in 1974 recovered Iron Age and Belgic pot sherds; Romano-British pot sherds were also recovered including samian, colour-coated and grey wares, and calcite gritted wares. Other finds included a mid C2nd sestertius of Faustina I. A stone scatter and roof tile fragments suggest the presence of a possible Romano-British building. Fifty early-middle Saxon pot sherds were also recovered including a stamp-decorated sherd.
Saxon settlement (SP 883650) at the NE end of the village, on limestone at 85 m. above OD. A large quantity of Saxon pottery has been found.

{3} Fieldwalking produced large amounts of Roman pottery (mainly coarse grey, and shelly wares) and two roof tile fragments. The pottery was evenly scattered over the whole ploughed area of five acres.

{4} Fieldwalking in 1974 recovered 300 Iron Age, Romano-British and Saxon pot sherds.

{5} A C2nd narrow-mouthed pottery jar. Pink and grey colour, 230-mm high. Complete except for minor chip in rim.
