Monument record 3793/0/1 - Roman cremation

A 2nd century Roman cremation in an urn was found in a field which is now part of Wicksteed Park.

{1} An urn, of rough light brown ware, and filled with earth and burnt bones was found 2ft down in the southern part of field 59 near Kettering. It is 7" high and tapers from 5" at the neck to 3" at the base; it has been dated by Reginald Smith, to the 2nd cent. (Sited to area SP 878772 from OS 1:2500, 1900).

{2} Roman burial found in the early 20th century in what is now Wickstead Park on the west side of the valley on sand at 68m above OD. An urn, now lost, but said to be of the 2nd century, full of earth and burnt bones, was discovered.

{4} The indicated find spot now falls in Wicksteed Park recreation ground. The present location of the urn is not known.
