Monument record 3864/0/2 - Possible Iron Age Pits

Pits were seen in a gas pipeline trench in 1966, but there was no dating evidence. Possibly a continuation of Iron Age settlement to the south.

{1} Pits were seen in a gas pipeline trench in 1966, but there was no dating evidence. This may be associated with the Iron Age and Roman settlement at Mears Ashby.

{2} Features recorded in 1966. Possible Iron Age pits. No dating evidence was recovered, but the features are possibly an extension of Mon 3867 to the south-west.

{3} (SP 856666) IA pits in gas pipe line trench. May 1966. R Hollowell.

{4} No surface evidence of former occupation in this area. Mr Hollowell states that the site was reported to him by one of the labourers employed by the Gas Contractors, he did not visit the site personally and the classification was suggested by D Jackson (MOW) as being a possible extension of SP 86 NE 16 which itself is classified as ? IA from sherds of pot which were not retained.
