Full Description

{1} A number of Iron Age features, including the site of a round hut, were excavated at Glendon
Bridge Quarry in the late winter/early spring of 1977.

There was a circular drainage gully 0.4 to 0.8m deep. Cut or partially cleaned out on at least two occassions. Enclosed an area some 11m in diameter. Entrance on the east-south-east side, and of two phases. 5.8m wide in phase 1 and 3.6m wide in phase 2. No internal hut plan recovered but seven pits were found at the back of the hut. Four could be contemporary with the hut (F1, F3, F6 and F7). A possible enclosure ditch pre-dates the hut and presumably forms part of an earlier enclosure. Ditch 0.8m deep with an entrance 4m wide on the south side. Some Iron Age pottery. There were two ditches outside the hut circle. Could be elongated pit(s). Ditch D, nearly 10m long. Two excavated sections roughly at either end. 0.5-6m and 0.95m deep. Ditch C, V shapped profile. Also sectioned twice and was between 1.15m and 1.3m deep. Over 10m long. Both ditches position in relation to the hut entrance suggests that they are associated. But apart from affording an extra barrier at the approaches to the hut, it is difficult to determine their precise function.

{2} A number of early Iron Age pits and ditches were excavated ahead of ironstone quarrying. A circular enclosure some 11m in diameter and with an east-facing entrance is presumed to have been a drainage gully encircling a hut, but no trace of the hut survived.

{3} Rescue excavation in advance of ironstone quarrying. Several early Iron Age pits and ditches were revealed along with a circular enclosure 11m in diameter. The latter had an east-facing entrance and possibly represents the drainage gully encircling a round house. [Gives probable incorrect NGR as SP875824, unlike earlier sources listed which place the site 200m to the north.]

{4} Early Iron Age ditches have been revealed by topsoil stripping prior to ironstone extraction. Jackson D.A.
