Full Description

{5} A series of features discovered in 1951, including a possible Roman wall, 13 pottery kilns and 10 iron smelting furnaces; it is possible that the so-called pottery kilns were in fact also iron smelting furnaces. Finds included Roman pot sherds, ash and iron slag.

{6} Possible iron ore furnaces were also exposed by the 1951 waterpipe trench. Listed as Roman.

{7} (SP 89378280). A rough stonework wall or causeway, 3ft down, of irregular thickness was found at Geddington in August 1951 while digging a trench for waterpipes. Two medieval potsherds and several coarse ware Romano-British sherds were found in the trench. (Nothing visible on APs).

{8} This trench ran from SP 89428287 to SP 89358271; during its digging the remains of 13 Ro pottery kilns were found. Salvaged pottery was classified by Kettering Museum as 2c/3c.

{9} Indicated area under pasture.

{10} "About ten small furnaces were discovered. Some contained ashes and iron slag and so it would appear that they were iron-smelting furnaces and not pottery kilns. As Roman pottery is said to have been found in the vicinity of the furnaces, they may well be of Roman date".
