Full Description

{1} An excavation revealed an Iron Age ditch 100m long, as well as pits, a ring of burnt stones and timber 2m in diameter and lines of burning; there were finds of burnt timber, a lump of iron from a crucible, Iron Age pot sherds, a Roman axe, a quern fragment and animal bone; fieldname: Blackfield; finds in the Northampton Museum ?; Northants. Natural History Society ?; Kettering Museum?;

{2} SP 867 897: Iron Age/Roman British site on Lodge Park Building Estate. Pits and a ditch 100 yards long which when sectioned proved to be full of charcoal and contained large numbers of gritty-sandy, hand made sherds and animal bones including the scapula of a deer. A circular band of burnt stones and wood was also noted (6 feet diameter, 8 inches wide and 2 inches deep). Also 'straight lines of burning' not associated with wooden buildings. A piece of smelted iron was found - obviously from a crucible and workmen picked up a Roman axe; now in Kettering Museum. Further excavation proposed.
