Summary

A hoard of small brass was found in an urn, the mouth of which had been noticed protruding from a bank for many years at Wootton. The coins, 615 of which could still be obtained a year after the discovery was made, ranged from Gallienus (253-68) to Neumerianus (283-4). The Wootton coin hoard was found nearly opposite the first toll bar from Northampton in a quarry field. Northampton Museum records state:"now in the Dryden Collection". A late 3rd century hoard.

Full Description

{1} A Romano-British coin hoard was found in an urn in a stone pit in the bank opposite the turnpike from Northampton to Stony Stratford, in December 1842

{2} A total of 684 coins was found in 1842 in a pot in a stone pit. They ranged in date from Gallienus (AD253-68) to Numerianus (AD283-4). Skeletons and 'other remains' were found in the same pit.

{4} The Wootton coin hoard was found nearly opposite the first toll bar from Northampton in a quarry field. (OS 1" 1st Edition: TG (Toll Gate) at SP 758 562. An old quarry is marked on OS 6" at SP 760 562).

{5} For many years an urn had been noticed protruding out of a bank. It contained 684 bronze coins ranging from Gallienus to Neumerianus.

{?} Includes coins of Postumus, Salonia, Tetricas, Tacitus, Probus and Arcadius. All of the coins are in a bad condition and some have a silver wash. They are in the possession of a butcher in Wootton. Skeletons and 'other remains' were recovered from the same pit.

{9} Mr Jospeh Clarke visited Wootton having heard about the discovery of coins. He managed to obtain the remaining 615 for examination. The coins, all of small brass, included: 66 Gallienus (reverses 29), 212 Victorinus (12 reverses), 117 Tetricus Pater (9 reverses) and 63 Claudius (24 reverses).
