Summary

Probable Iron Age settlement consisting of ditches and pits with coarse pottery. Traces of Roman occupation consisting of a semi circle of burnt wood and stones, possibly indicating a hut site with 2nd to 4th century Romano British pottery.

Full Description

{1}Ditches and pits containing probable Iron Age pottery, animal bone and burnt clay have been found; in the same area Roman pot sherds and burnt timber have been found;

{3} SP 872900: Probable Iron Age ditches pits and coarse pottery have been found along with animal bones and burnt clay on Shire Lodge housing estate. In another area Roman pottery and burnt timber was found. A semi-circle of burnt wood and stones of shallow depth was also seen. (Shire Lodge Estate does not extend to SP 872900 on OS 1958).

{4} The finds were probably made when the area was built over c1966. No finds have apparently been reported subsequently.

{5} The RB pottery was dated to the C2nd to C4th.
