Full Description

{1} Construction of the railway in the C19th revealed " a pavement, urns and coins".

{2} When the Rugby to Stamford Railway was constructed in the C19th "several fragments of Roman pavement, urns, coins etc" were discovered in a field called Alderstone which can be located to SP794916. From this field a Roman coin and pieces of mortarium have been found. Another Roman coin, probably from the same area, was recorded earlier
[SMR note 15/02/2010: this NGR is some 600m east of where other finds have been made, and so may either be incorrect, or the site is very extensive.]

{3} At the nearby vicinity of Alderstone Field other Roman antiquities, including a “pavement” were encountered during construction of the Rugby to Stamford railway which opened in 1850. The modern location of these last finds is at NGR SP794916.

{4} Also a Romano-British coin and mortaria fragments. The finds are now located in Market Harborough Museum. The material probably represents the south-western [read 'south-eastern'?] extension of a large Iron Age and Roman site in the east [read 'west'?] of Ashley parish.

{7} .."Also in Ashby [Sic] field, which is immediately on the other [Northants] side of the Welland, bricks, and appearances of ancient foundations, have been broken up in ploughing"(a) [Name 'Ashley' shown on sketch map.]

{8} Roman Villa: site "where mosaic or tessellated pavements are recorded without description

{9} [Area centred SP 79409163] Along the north side of the railway, in the second field from the road, a Roman coin (now lost?) was found some years ago and pieces of mortar have been found in a badger-scrape. I do not know the name 'Alderston' but this must be the area where the earlier finds were made. Nothing of significance was seen in the area indicated which is now a pasture field.
