Full Description

{2} Deserted Farmstead (SP 79867646; Fig. 98), in the N. part of Mawsley Wood, on Boulder Clay at 450 m. above OD. A small rectangular enclosure, bounded by a low bank only 0.25 m. high, is just visible in dense undergrowth. Within it is a large amount of 16th and 17th-century pottery as well as 17th and 18th-century brick, tile and building stone. It is perhaps the site of a late medieval farmstead which lay within the former land of the deserted village of Mawsley.

{3}Roman Settlement (?) (SP 79867647), within Mawsley Wood, in the W. of the parish, on Boulder Clay at 137 m. above OD. Roman pottery and a piece of flue tile were found here in 1960, and more pottery was discovered in 1969.

Sherds of Roman pottery and fragment of relief paterned flue-tile found in 1960. Now in Westfield Museum.

{4} Fragmentary grey ware from this site is held by Westfield Museum, Kettering. At the indicated site are traces of a rectangular earthwork with rounded corners. It is, at the moment, under heavy growth. Classification is not possible and winter investigation is necessary. Within the earthwork is a heavy scatter of late Md/early modern brick, tile and building stone, and late Md pottery (of a rough nature), and a few Roman sherds were picked up. The site indicates a former building (?late Md) with probable earlier occupation.
