Full Description
{1} A hoard of Norman coins was found in the village of Scaldwell a few years ago. Amongst them were over 260 pennies and halfpennies of William I, issued from 39 different mints.
{4} RCHME say hoard is from ironstone quarrying.
{5} Unlocated finds. Medieval coin hoard comprising 260 pennies and half pennies of William I. From 39 different mints. OS say the hoard is from the village.
{6} Scaldwell centred SP 769725. Northampton Museum has no knowledge of this hoard.
{7} Raymond Carlyon-Britton (he recorded the 'War area' hoard in 1916, British Numismatic Journal Vol 12, pp 15-32, which is thought to be associated with this hoard) noted that the hoard was found 'only a few feet outside the present boundary wall of a churchyard of considerable antiquity' by men digging a trench'. The only Church in the area is Church of St Peter and St Paul, Scaldwell. In 1914 there were no houses to the immediate north of the Church, so it may well be the footings for these where the hoard was found. Approximately SP 76868 72574.
