Full Description

{1} A shallow ditch of Belgic/early Roman date, which was excavated from 70cm back from the face, giving an approximate alignment of 115 degrees to north. The primary clay silt contained 18 sherds, some with vertical combing and incised grooves, 35 pieces of food bone and some burnt daub. Above this lay a deposit of burnt brushwood and the upper fill contained 7 sherds including sherds with neck cordon, much fragmented food bone, some iron slag and a large quantity of helicidae shells. Unstratified finds from the immediate area disturbed by topsoil removal included 12 sherds of simialr type, with combed and cordoned vessels represented, also a strap handle in light cream fabric and a sherd from a girth or pedestal beaker in pinky grey ware with a burnt red clay grog.
