Summary

Several mounds identified as tumuli located within the park of Delapre Abbey. Some these may be natural features and one may be a tree mound but during the removal of one of these mounds Roman coins were allegedly found.

Full Description

{1} Roman coins are said to have been discovered during the removal of some 'tumuli' in Delapre Park before the mid 19th century {2}. No such tumuli are known, however, and although a slight mound still exists at SP 75525871 this appears to be natural.

{2} In the area of SP7558 was an earthwork pre 1849 'Tumuli' in Delapre Park.

{3} Mound in Delapre Park appears to be natural hillock covered in ridge and furrow.

{4} Mound in Delapre Park is mostly natural; may have been tree mound.

{5} The feature at SP 7552 5871 is mostly natural but may once have been a tree mound; there are several others in the park. No tumuli could be identified and Northampton Museum have no information regarding the coins found hereabouts.
