Full Description

{1}Earthwork of a large sub-circular enclosure comprising an enclosing ditch and traces of an internal bank; observed during fieldwork undertaken by G. Cadman in September 1989 - March 1990; situated in Horn Wood, possibly the northwest part of a large banked and ditched enclosure, measuring 25m in diameter; a 30m length of the ditch was identified; it was a maximum of 8m wide with a 5m wide bank on the inner side; other earthworks to the west and northwest were identified; though undated it is suspected that it may be of pre-woodland origin, possibly Iron Age in date (?);

{2} Geophysical survey undertaken on 22/04/91 by P. Masters and G. Cadman in an attempt to recover a complete plan of the former enclosure; the results proved to be inconclusive as there were distortions due to a nearby pheasant enclosure;

{?}Find; the body sherd of an Iron Age pot was recovered from a tree throw hole on an earthwork in Horn Wood;

{3}Possible Iron Age enclosure, identified by G. Cadman.

{4} Linear ditches

{7} A geophysical survey was undertaken around the remains of the earthwork in an attempt to recover the complete plan of the former enclosure. The survey produced disappointing results, although there were several constraints which impacted the survey.
