Monument record 5578/0/1 - Early-middle Saxon settlement, rear of Ambridge Close

An Iron Age defended enclosure had been identified here in 1986. As building work extended southwards, evidence of Anglo-Saxon activity was revealed. A small area of ironstone bedrock was stripped and eight features were sampled.

{1} Anglo-Saxon features revealed during rescue excavation to south of an enclosure excavated in 1986. Features included pits and post-holes. Pottery was dated to early-middle Saxon period.

{3} A small area of bedrock, some 10m long and 4m wide and situated adjacent to the boundary hedge between Wootton Hill Farm and the housing estate, was cleaned and eight features were planned and sample excavated. The site is now to the rear of No 16 Ambridge Close. The recorded features include a ditch, two pits, three possible post holes and a large depression or shallow pit. The latter, which was at least 5m long, 1.5m wide and up to 0.3m deep in the bedrock, only partially survived destruction by a sewer trench.
