Full Description

{1} Watching brief/minor excavation was undertaken during the construction of the Brixworth Bypass by Graham Cadman (March-April 1989). A quantity of ironstone fragments, burnt stone, a possible cobbled area and various cut features were observed. Unstratified pottery dated to the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. Beyond the main focus six pits and ditches were revealed in section with 1st and 2nd century AD pottery. A small quantity of unstratified Roman pottery was found further west, but no features were observed.

{2}Salvage recording identified concentrations of stone including a possible cobbled area and cut features associated with unstratified pottery of the 2nd-4th centuries AD. Nearby ditches identified in roadside drainage cuts contained Roman and Belgic-type pottery suggesting the existence of a rectilinear ditched network orientated aproximately north-south by east-west.

{4}Roman ditches, watching brief G Cadman.
