Monument record 1817/0/1 - Early Middle Saxon Ditch, Postholes & Pit

{1} Trial excavation in August 1990 by S.Parry. A small posthole structure, pit and ditch revealed may all date from the early middle Saxon period.

{2} Evaluation carried out by S.Parry and M.Webster in an area of early middle Saxon pottery.

{3} A trench was opened to the west of the central enclosure exposing a ditch some 0.8m deep, which contained 4 Roman and 60 early middle Saxon sherds, including one with two diamond-shaped stamps. A group of postholes adjacent to the ditch may form the partially preserved remains of a contemporary structure. Only the base survived of some of the portholes and it is likely that others have been destroyed by subsequent ploughing. Five of the postholes contained a total of 29 sherds of Saxon pottery, including one with rusticated decoration. An oval vertically sided pit, some 0.48m deep, located 50m south-west of the structure contained a further 29 sherds of early middle Saxon pottery.
