Monument record 9502/1/1 - Site of medieval forest lodge, Wakerley Great Wood

Ruins of a stone building situated within a ditched enclosure (moat?).

{1} Site of a lodge with a boundary ditch and bank of c.5m width, forming a square of side c.30m. Internal stone building 7.5m square with walls 1.5m high. Central to both medieval park & smaller 16th century stone-walled park.

{3} Hardwood trees on and around the site have been felled with thinning beyond, particularly to the north and west, to create a pleasant open area within the wood. Loppings are being used to construct dead hedges within the ditches defining the outer enclosure to the lodge. Within this open environment the rectangular grass covered earthwork of the lodge stands out prominently with its limestone core/walling prominently visible.
