Type and Period (5)

Full Description

{1} C16-17th gardens at Great Purston manor.

{2} Garden remains (SP 519394), lying SE of and presumably contemporary with the manor house [SP 53 NW 10]. The presence of complete ridge and furrow (until recent destruction) suggests that the layout of the garden was never completed. A partially complete terrace walk, rectangular pond, and a 'mount' and 'Bowling Green' shown on a map of 1768 are the only known elements of the garden, though the intended design appears to be mid 17th century. [RCHM plan].
