Full Description

{1} T Shirley observed the development of a site in Bransons Lane. A 'mass of Roman sherds and ditches showed up, including some very small tesserae and much Samian ware, some stamped'. The exact site is not known.

{2} A trial trench excavated in 1986 revealed foundations of 18th and 19th century buildings, culvert and water closet. Beneath these features was an earlier ditch which may have been of Roman origin, although there were no associated finds. Subsequent excavation by CLASP in 2017 re-excavated this area. Some of the 18th/19th century features previously recorded had since been disturbed or destroyed. The ditch identified in the earlier evaluation was reinvestigated and found to be an 18th century drainage feature. There was no evidence of earlier features.
