Summary

Medieval pottery kiln, part of the Stanion pottery industry, was recorded during construction of a bungalow during the 1930s. The kiln was indicated by finds of pottery, including complete pots and would have been in production sometime between the mid 12th-mid 14th century. Some of the finds were given to Westfield Museum, Kettering and Northamptonshire Museum

Full Description

{1} A kiln containing complete pots was found during building work in 1939.
Few details of the pottery industry at Stanion are known, but they produced pottery of a similar type to Lyveden ware and probably of the same date.

{2} Building development in 1939: A medieval pottery kiln was found in the garden. It contained complete pots. Recorded by Seabourne in 1961.

{3} Source states that the kiln was revealed in the garden of 1 Corby Road in 1961, not 1939.

{5} [SP 91418701] Md. sherds found when preparing the site for building a bungalow in the 1930's. The finds according to the owner Mrs R Thompson included several complete vessels. Some broken fragments were discovered before 1939 and were given to Westfield Museum, Kettering.

{6} The occupant of the house in whose garden the grid reference falls, knows nothing of the finds of authy {8}.

{7} "The pottery found was fragmentary and a precise classification is not possible".

{8} Md. pottery kiln found in garden at SP 91448700. Site confirmed by Northampton Museum who have retained the sherds.
