Monument record 1160/0/14 - Late Saxon Occupation Layers (Site B), Horsemarket

Excavation of a sewer trench on Horsemarket in 1972 identified a small area of occupation with pottery fabrics very similar to those identifed on an adjacent kiln site (Site A).

{2} Excavation of a sewer trench on Horsemarket in 1972. An area of late Saxon occupation (Site B) comprising floors and occupation levels was observed. It was located c35m to the north of a pottery kiln (Site A) recorded the previous year in the same sewer trench. Much of the pottery found at Site B was in same fabric. Five separate periods of occupation were identified, although all appear to have dated from the late Saxon period. An alignment of postholes, possibly a building or fenceline bordered the boundary with Horsemarket.
