Summary

A watching brief after the demolition of 45-53 Bridge Street revealed earlier road surfaces running on the line of Bridge Street. The surfaces overlaid a slot cut into the natural which contained 12th-13th-century pottery

Full Description

{1} East side of Bridge Street revealed 3 metalled surfaces over a slot cut into natural; natural approximately 2m below present ground level; 2 C12-13th pottery sherds found within slot; 1 sherd Stamford Ware also found; SP75426022;

{4} A watching brief after the demolition of 45-53 Bridge Street revealed earlier road surfaces running on the line of Bridge S. Three metalled surfaces could be identified, the earliest of which sat directly on top of a clay subsoil and was c 2m below the present street level. A beam slot c 0.5m wide was sealed by the earliest metalled surface and ran parallel with the present Bridge Street.
