Full Description

{1} Two trial trenches were excavated. One of the main research aims was to locate the town;s late Saxon defences. Post holes, slots and rubbish pits of 10th to 12th century date were discovered at a depth of only 0.4m below the modern grund surface. A shallow ditch aligned east to west across the north end of the site dated to the 12th century and is more likely to be an internal property boundary rather than a defensive line. There were few features of later date cut into the Saxo-Norman levels.
