Type and Period (2)

Full Description

{1}The site is marked on OS maps, but no records of any finds existed until recently and it has been regarded as a mislocation. However Roman pottery and building stone have since been found, and ditches have been discovered during pipe-trenching.

{2} Romano-British sherds and building stone. A pipeline trench cut through ditches either side of the site. River gravel. SP 970710;

{4}?Ploughing produced tesserae and fragments of tessellated pavement from the further end of 'The Meadow Furlong';

{6} SP 97047112. Pieces of Roman mosaic (?) ploughed up here in December 1949.

{7} SP 97047112. ROMAN BUILDING (R) (site of) NAT (Not published on OS 6" provisional edition 1952, or on earlier editions).

{8} Incorrect siting, apparently derived from information supplied by R W Brown (and also probably from the previous identification of the site on the Archaeology Division Record with that first mentioned by Bridges in 1791. See SP 97 SE 7).

{9} A single fragment of Samian ware was found on this site in 1967 during the laying of a pipeline.
