Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking by S.Parry as part of The Raunds Area Survey. An extensive concentration of worked flint covering the valley side. Mostly late Neolithic/early Bronze Age with some Bronze Age, and the remainder early Neolithic and Mesolithic.

{2} 263 flints recovered from an area of 12ha. (22 flints per ha.). Within the overall homogeneity of the Raunds Area Survey, Crow Hill (1) and Cotton Henge (20) each have a greater proportion of implements at 7.6% and 6.3% respectively; this possibly denotes a domestic element. Follow up trial excavation however failed to locate any features of the early prehistoric period or any pottery deating to before the late Bronze Age.
An extensive concentration of worked flints covered the valley side (Fig.6.3b). Some 12ha have individual densities of 10 or more flints which identify high points in three distinct trends (Fig 4.1).
Irregular debitage and parent material were evenly distributed throughout the area. Scrapers and other implements appear to be largely distributed along the valley side in close correlation with the underlying Northampton Sand and Ironstone, but without any distinct focus. Concentrations of regular debitage occur upslope on great Oolite Limestone. Smaller amounts of regular debitage together with the implements provided densities of over 10 flints per ha. Within the area of the subsequent hillfort. A smaller concentration of regular debitage outside the entrance of the hillfort comprising 15 flints from 5 stints was also identified. Trial trenches dug at this point and within the hillfort failed to identify any pre–Iron Age features however.
