Full Description

{1} Stone scatter and pottery found January 1966. Probably on an unknown Roman road; there is a mound or ridge in the field.

{2} The "mound or ridge" has been thought to be the possible meeting-place of Huxlow Hundred. In 1934 it is described as 'a low mound with some large stones lying on the surface and foundations riddled with rabbit-holes'. The three fields to the north were known as "Huxlow Closes". SP96507935. O.S. field observation c.1969 failed to identify the mound.

{3} The derivation of Huxloe given in Northamptonshire Place-Names is "Hoc's hlaw" ie. His barrow or hill. The cross which presumably marked the site of the grave was according to Bridges the meeting place of the hundredal court of Huxloe. In 1934 we tried to identify the site and with the help of a map three fields were identified now called Huxloe Closes, near to Drayton House. In the corner of Ladygrove Spinney, one field behind Huxloe Closes, we found a low mound with some large stones lying just on the surface and foundations riddled with rabbit holes. This spot, which is on high ground, is just over 0.5 miles to the east of Slipton Church and only 200-300yds from the parish boundary.

{4} Field name: Lower Great Huxlow.
