Full Description

{2} The greater part of the Lilford part of the parish is occupied by Lilford Park

{3} Date of enclosure at Lilford is unknown but had certainly taken place by the C18th. The former village of Lilford was removed during emparking in 1755 which left few traces apart from the village church which was demolished in 1788.

{4} Plan of Lilford Estate shows different parts of the parkland. Rectangular deer park to north of house is marked No.1 "Lilford Park".

{18} Thomas Powys Esq. 2nd edition 1791 - house only, no park.

{19} Here was formerly a park inclosed now by a stone wall within which is a paddock. 12 houses. Present possessor Thomas Powys, a minor, father Thomas died 1719/20 aged 32.1711 manor bought by Sir Thomas Powys Kt (died 4.4.1719 aged 70) judge of Queen's Bench from Mr Adams, a money-scrivens who bought (in discharge of debts) from Will Elmes, Esq. Only son of Anthogy Elmes of Green's Norton.

{20} Deserted after circa 1700. Mansion built 1635. Houses of Lilford demolished 1755+ and rebuilt in Wigsthorpe by Sir Thomas Powys who had acquired manor in 1711. Church demolished c.1780 and arches re-erected near the river as a picturesque ruin.

{28} "Elmes a gentil (man hath) a praty Manor place."

{29} Medieval deer park 1317 - Robert de Willoughby. Thomas Powys was created Lord Lilford, 1797.

{32}/{33} Robert de Willoughby's estate in 1317 included a manor & park which he held jointly with his wife Margaret;
