Full Description

{1}Sampling of several areas during development; deep stratigraphy revealed but as only small trial boxes were excavated this could simply reflect fill of quarry pits; presumed to be "Scott Road July/August 1961" excavation of trial boxes by Lyall;,

{3}Excavations in 1959/60 revealed several Romano-British pits & quarry pits; excavated by F.V.Lyall at east corner of Scott Rd & Byron Rd & at Nos 41-51 Scott Rd;

{2}The occurrence of quarry pits dug into the Northampton sands at a number of locations across the town (3957/0/27, 3957/0/29, 3957/0/33, 3957/0/40) and the recording of tap slag and furnace debris from the Kipling road excavations (3957/0/27) confirm the suspicion that iron extraction and smelting may have been a key craft activity across the southern half of the settlement at least.
