Full Description

{1} Trial excavation; G Johnston; April 1987; undated walls, ditches, postholes; extensive building debris; some medieval glazed ridge tiles; little medieval pot; mostly Roman tile/pot;

{2} Trial excavation, 1987. A low linear mound at the north end of Trench 1 was composed of building rubble, plaster, Collyweston stone tiles and medieval glazed ridge tiles. This would suggest the site of a medieval building, although Roman roofing tile and pot sherds were also present, suggesting re-use of Roman material or landscaping which had disturbed Roman deposits. A robbed out wall, close to the NW corner of the stable block, may be medieval and two other walls may be predecessors of the current building.
