Monument record 447/1/0 - Romano-British Finds From Watling Street

Roman artefacts discovered during widening of Watling Street near Towcester

{1} During the widening of Watling Street opposite The Lodge at SP 6850 5012, a number of Romano-British finds, including brooches and coin, were found at a depth of 6ft;

{2} Finds included pottery, two brooches and three coins (of Nero, Nerva and Constantine I) were found;

{3} During the widening of Watling Street, opposite the Lodge (SP 6850 5012), Towcester, various Roman finds were made. These included a penannular brooch, a 'head - stud' fibula of the 2nd century, and a coin of Constantine I (A.D. 306-37), all found 6' deep. On the road coins of Nero (A.D. 54-68) and Nerva (AD 96-8) were found. These are now in Mr Victor Ashby's collection, together with pottery found here and elsewhere in Towcester, including a lamp, samian ware and a lead weight.

{4} Mr Ashby's widow was contacted but would not reveal the present location of his records and collection.
