Full Description

{1} Possible Iron Age pits were revealed. A number of features were exposed in a drain trench which ran approximately east-west across the site. Pottery was recovered from three of these but most were not investigated, and are only assumed to be Iron Age in date by the similar nature of their fillings. One of the features had vertical sides and was almost certainly a pit, some 1.5m in diameter x 0.75m deep. One side of the drain trench was cleaned to a section. In the section a layer of mortar, small stone and dark loam tipped toward the river, and this in turn overlay another layer thought to be Iron Age in date. If the mortar is of Roman date, it suggests that there were walls or floors of this period nearby.
