Summary

There is documentary evidence for a mill in the 14th century. Grinding ceased in 1950, although the mill was used by the Midland Spice Company for spice grinding in an adjoining building. Buildings now converted to dwelling.

Full Description

{1} Post med mill; still extant in 1966.

{2} 14th century Mill was the home of Peter de Molendino.
1385 Thomas Baa surrendered to Robert de Melton, clerk, and John Rowe, parson of Garthorpe, his estate of two water-mills with two holmes adjacent in Slapton.
1748 A water-mill and wind-mill in Slapton advertised in Slapton.
1789 Jane Haynes, of Slapton, miller and mortgager, insured £160 on a house and mills communicating, situate in Slapton, thatched, in the tenure of the said Jane Haynes.
1810 Advertisement for Slapton Mills to be let states the mills had recently undergone a complete repair, were worked by a breast water-wheel and were capable of working three pairs of stone although only two pairs were installed.
1857 Mills again advertised to be let 'a water corn mill with steam engine attached'.
1885-94 Course family, millers using steam and water power.
1897 Water and steam mill, with house and premises in Slapton for sale.
1928 John Victor Messinger, last miller at Slapton Mill in a trade directory.
c1950 Grinding ceased. There were two pairs of stones at this time.
1951 Steam engine removed, for preservation somewhere in Edinburgh.
1966 Midland Spice Company used electrically driven machines for spice grinding in adjoining building, the water-wheel and gearing still being in position in the mill.
1988 Mill-house and extensive mill buildings advertised for sale in the region of £320,000.
2000 Advertised for sale The Old Spice Mill in the region of £625,000 after mill had been converted to more dwelling accommodation.
2001 Sold by August and extensive work on accommodation, including removal of name Old Spice Mill.
