Full Description
{1}Anchor Brewery at Buckby Wharf;
{2} In 1864, Francis Montgomery was listed as an artificial manure manufacturer. By 1869 he had linked up,with William Harry Harris F.C.S., analytical chemist to form Montgomery, Harris & Co., brewers, with premises at Long Buckby Wharf (SP 607 655). Within six years, Harris had left the partnership and the business was carried on as Francis & William Montgomery but by 1885 Francis was on his own, he had added maltster, spirit merchant and also brick and tile maker to the occupations he carried on from the Anchor Brewery.
By 1898, Walker & Soames had taken over the premises, trading as maltsters, brewers and spirit merchants. In 1903 this partnership also had premises in High Street, Towcester, where they were known to manufacture mineral waters (some clear glass mineral water bottles survive embellished with a primitive presentation of their Towcester factory) and also the Victoria Brewery, in Northampton and it seems that brewing ceased at Long Buckby about this time. Certainly by 1910, Hopcraft & Norris Ltd. of Brackley were using the brewery at Buckby Wharf as a stores but discontinued doing so during the First World War. The Brewery was subsequently demolished.
