Full Description
{1} A small early Bronze Age pit or hearth was found near to the modern cemetery on the western boundary of the site. The pit, which was 0.65m in diameter and 0.10m deep was filled with dark soil and contained burnt stone. Fragments of Beaker pottery and worked flints were found scattered in and around the feature. A number of other small pits were found nearby which may have been of this date. Some contained worked flints but there was no other dating evidence.
A further pit some 4m to the north may also have been of early Bronze Age date. Althought there was no dating evidence within the fill, pieces of collared urn which conform to the Primary Collared Urn tradition were found nearby.
The vessels are assumed to be funerary urns. It is uncertain if the pits represent domestic activity or if the pits themselves are associated with burial rites.
{3} Neolithic occupation on the site is suggested by the recovery of a small quantity of pottery and worked flints. One small pit was revealed that seems to have been of this date.
