Full Description
{1} Unlocated finds made during machine scraping 'at Stanwick' in September 1992. A hoard of 11-12 Romano-British bronze bowls found; 6 complete bowls were removed by persons unknown, 4/5 incomplete bowls were taken to Northampton Museum. The hoard came out of what is reported as 'a large hole' with bronze bowl fragments scattered thereabouts. Contents also included an Iron Age 'cauldron' and 'Irchester-type' undecorated bowls with inturned rims. There was also part of a decorated strainer. The items were left at Northampton Museum.
{2} Further research suggests that the most complete objects were stolen by a person or persons unknown, leaving only fragments to be passed to the museum. When found, the vessels were reportedly packed with straw inside a much-patched cauldron. The Stanwick hoard was probably a 4th or 5th century deposition and adds to the growing corpus of late Roman copper alloy vessel hoards from Britain.
