Full Description
{1}One of two evaluation trenches were excavated between St Giles' Street and Dychurch Lane. The trench, right-angles to Dychurch Lane, was more heavily disturbed. Stone wall-footing, floor levels and part of a tiled floor attested to occupation on this frontage. Most of area had been removed by Victorian cellars and pits.
{2} Trench B was excavated at right angles to the Dychurch Lane frontage, but proved to have been heavily disturbed in recent times. A north-south aligned Victorian wall was identified and abutting it on one side was a series of cellar fills. A small area of undisturbed ground was excavated down to natural subsoil. A layer of dark silty loam immediately above it contained 13th-century pottery and set immediately on top was an ironstone wall aligned north-south. Layers abutting the wall contained medieval pottery. A further, undated, wall appeared to have gone out use by the 17th-18th century.
