The street is present on the 1610 map of the town and is named as College Lane by 1746.

{5} Documentary research has placed medieval streets known as 'Laries Twichen' and 'Golofre Lane' as modern College Street. College Lane is named in documents from the 15th century up to at least 1841. College Street occurs from at least 1704. Little Silver Street may have formed part of Laries Twichen or was the northern extension of it. Lack of major properties in the 14th century.
