Full Description
{1} A watching brief undertaken in 1995 identified a medieval ground surface liberally covered with pot sherds and pieces of broken kiln material. This was lifted in a series of five traverses without any distinct variation from north to south. Much material had sunk into a former boundary ditch running along the back of the site. A gully c.0.3m wide ran across the site, this contained medieval and later material, and was probably dug for drainage, running to the boundary ditch. In the south-west corner of the site an orange clay platform was revealed, revetted by stones. The south-east corner clipped a narrow, stone wall of uncertain date.
The quantity of pottery and the presence of a fragmented baked kiln structure, including firebars, indicates that a kiln was present hereabouts. A provisional date for the material suggests a slightly earlier date than the kiln excavated at the Old Coach Station, which was late medieval.
