Full Description

{3}A find of Anglo-Saxon coins in the parish of Duddington.,

{1}Anglo-Saxon coins found during building development at Todds Barn, Duddington.,

{2}37 silver pennies dating from 860s-870s in the reigns of Brugred, King of Mercia and his brothers-in-law Ethelred 1 and Alfred the Great (kings of Wessex). Many of the coins were heavily corroded and fragmentary. Fibres of linen found surrounding the coins (origional container). Believed to represent a coin hoard - due to context of find and political situation at the time (Vikings raiding England extensively in early 870s).Coin hoards usually contain a mixture of coins as here. Hoard represents the monetary equivalent of #600-#700, likely that it was deliberatly concealed c.874-5. Over 20 coins hoards for this period are on record.
