Feature observed in drainage trench during the construction of a new road. A large quantity of shoe leather retrieved from a black layer possibly within a pit. Cobblers off-cuts indicate a nearby repair shop

Full Description

{1} Watching brief undertaken during construction of new road. In drainage trench edge a large quantity of shoe leather was retrieved from a black layer c0.25m thick and c3m below current ground level. Possibly in a large pit, but no time to make detailed observations.

The leather comprised about 70 items of footwear, complete or parts, together with part of a dagger case and a wallet. Ankle boots with slit front and two or three lacing holes with a leather lace were the most common item; about 10 men's and 2 children's. A number of soles also. Mostly of working type, welted. One 'crackowe' type (long pointed toe) first mentioned c1367. Other finds included textile, animal bone, possible cobblers tools, iron knives and a latchlifter.
